Peur de rien (2015)
This is a really lovely little film. Incidentally, it's also another example of a bizarre choice of French-to-English title translation. Peur de rien, afraid of nothing, speaks volumes more than the allegedly English-language Parisienne (c'mon guys, this isn't even an English word). We follow Lina, a Lebanese student arriving in Paris to continue her studies, and the various trials and tribulations she faces in navigating this new world - the freedom and loneliness of being a foreigner in a strange new place. As someone presently a foreigner in a strange land, I think this may have resonated with me in particular. Manal Issa is phenomenal as Lina here; there is an indefatigable strength and spirit to her, something in her eyes - some ineffable sense of defiance or resolve that I find endlessly endearing. I feel it would be impossible to dislike her. When she smiles, I melt.
